6 month review of Hetzner - cheap dedicated servers.

$
0
0

6 months ago I decided that I would go away from cloud hosting for my main sites, and some of my backup sites, and got two servers @ Hetzner

WHAT?? are you thinking, but I wanted more control over my servers, and wanted to have more services on fewer hosts and servers.++

I found out about their server bidding, you can get decent servers there for cheap money, and there is no setup fee or contract. I’m using Windows Server 2012 R2 DC on my servers and use Hyper-V to run my VMs.

And this had now worked 100% for the last 6 months.

Link to my site...

Product/hardware/price

At Hetzner you can get it all, from several thousand euro per month servers, to €26/mo servers. And since I’m on a low budget I did find their serverbidding site, and found me a couple of good servers.

The servers sold on their serverbidding is mostly 2-3 years old. Core i7 2600/3770/3930 and Xeon E3/E5 is mostly what you find there. The auction works like this, the price drop on different servers at different times, if somebody grab the server before you, the price goes up again, and it will take hours up to days before the price is so good again. I had two servers, a Core i7 2600 with 16 GB RAM and a Core i7 3770 32 GB RAM both with 2 x 3 TB HDDs and 20 TB bandwidth @ 1 Gbps, then 10mbps the rest of the time (if you use up 20 TB with BW) And I paid only €26/mo for each server.

I have changed one server, mostly because people recommended it, but I think I regret it, but still, my setup now is:

**Server1:**
`XEON E3-1245v2, 32 GB EEC RAM, 2 x 3 TB Enterprise HDD, 20 TB BW, 9 extra IPs. Price: €59/mo`
**Server2:**
`Core i7 3770, 16 GB RAM, 2 x 3 TB HDD, 20 TB BW, 3 extra IPs: Price: €28.52/mo`

The reason why Server1 cost so much more then Server2 is because of two things: The CPU was €11/mo more expensive then a i7 3770. And then the IPs. I have three extra IPs (0.84 each) and a /29 subnet. (€6.72) And Hetzner force you to have something called a flexi pack when you want /29 /28 /27 subnets. At that costs €12.61 extra per month. Not happy for that, had gladly paid €6 extra for the IPs, but have to pay twice that just to add a subnet is not a good thing.

Some times you are lucky with the disks you get. On my i7 3770 server, the disks was brand new when I got the server. On my XEON server my disks is around two years old.

Still, you get allot for your money. If you are lucky to get a server at the right time, you can get a very good price, and lots of disk space etc.

Service/Support

Hetzer are a unmanaged host. They fix network and hardware issues, but thats it. All other support cost money. Still, I sent in some tickets in the start, just to see if they helped or not, and at the first I got fast and good help, but then they started to say that they only support Network and Hardware, and that you have to pay for all other support.

They also charge you for the most. Like the flexi pack, if you need to boot from a USB, you have ONE hard reset per month, then you have to pay (so don’t turn the server off)

Still, what can you expect from a company that sells you a Core i7 3770 32 GB RAM, 6 TB HDD, and 20 TB BW on 1 Gbps port for €26/mo?

Have not had any hardware issues at all the last 6 months, so I have not tested their real network/hardware support.

Benchmark

I have taken benchmark from one Linux server on each server, both using 4 cores, and 3 GB of RAM and here is the result:

First the Xeon E3-1245v2:

I tested with 8 cores on the server, but since the 4 last core is just threads, the resu

Then the Core i7 3770, actually this one got a little better result then the XEON.

Network/uptime

100% uptime on the network on both Data centers (16 and 19) I have my servers the last 6 months.

Conclusion

I did go from a real cloud service @ Iwstack.com to a dedicated server. Was sure that was a bad idea, but since I have my own fail over service, servers in two different DC, backups on Vultr and a good host like Hetzner, my switch was not so bad. My servers is much faster then the Iwstack system, and I can start, stop, create etc server much faster on my servers then at Iwstack. I can use Hyper-V so I can Live export my servers how often I want, no snapshot that only works in this and that way. Full snapshot, that can be imported back on the same server, or on another server with Hyper-V. Just change the IP, and you are up and running again.

No abuse on the server, just me. The network can be from 200 mbps to 1 gbps. I think that will have something to do with other servers on the same rack using BW.

Still, after 6 months, I don’t regret that I changed from Iwstack to my own dedicated servers. But of course, it cost more money. Before I paid less then I do today, but I have put several of my services in the two servers, saving money here and there. Still, it cost more then the cloud. Since I used so little RAM, HDD and CPU cores.

Edit: This is LET, we normally talk about cheap VPS servers, but been here for over a year now, I have also seen that dedicated servers is a big part of this forum. I looked at the guidelines, and companies can advertise here if their server cost less then $49/mo and at Hetzner you can get servers down to €26/mo = $44/mo. So I'm not a host, but still, this is a valid review.

Please take a look at my Top20 benchmark list on my site.

iKoula: one of the finest hosts out there

I feel obliged to write this mainly because my conscience demands it.. It is our duty in the community to write true reviews for excellent providers and provide them the necessary coverage they need to breathe and expand.

I have been getting vps, servers for over a decade now and it is rare to come across a host who is as genuine as iKoula .

I was lucky enough to grab 2 of their atom servers offer with awesome specs for an even better price almost an year ago.

Frankly I only make use of the one while the other one idles but I don't cancel it either mainly because I know an offer and service at the price they provide is almost impossible to find elsewhere.

The network for all my purposes is top notch, my machine has been online and connectable without a single second of network downtime since the beginning.

I have only had to deal with the support once because I needed to change the payment term on one of my machines to quarterly instead of monthly.

I recommend iKoula to everyone here and I hope they will continue offering great features and prices with the same level of quality.

Looking for bestwebhosting.co.uk reviews

Hi, I want to choose a good host reselling service. I read on this forum about bestwebhosting.co.uk. I also talked to their support and they seem to be good and fast. They claim to offer Unlimited Disk Space and Bandwidth for only 9 pounds. So i can create 1000 hosting accounts and only pay 9 pounds/month for all of them. Does anyone have experience with them?

Hi,

Ordered their bundle #3 with powerboost. Payment made and nothing happened. No clear description whether powerboost was offered as recurring or not. Raised tickets for no service activation - Nothing actually happens once you pay. After many hours someone came in and said " Choose another provider ".

What the hell is happening with these guys ? Is now asking questions a sin too.

{Title edited by @jarland because the OP lied to all of us by omission, leaving out important details of this matter in order to rally support from members here. Shame on him.}

Netcup.eu first impressions for Root Server M SSD iv6

Hi,

These are the first impressions regarding Netcup. I signup with them a few days ago and as a non German costumer, the first payment was made by bank transfer ... this is a good measure that allow them to avoid some nasty costumers.

I have to say that they reply to emails very fast within they working hours and they are very friendly. Never needed support other than some minor questions.

The control panel is complete, but need a full English translation.

We are able to use the usual linux/windows images, you can install from Netinstall images provided by them or upload your own isos, qcow2 or raw images.

These are the usual benchmarks for "Root Server M SSD iv6" little monster :)

SYS-IP-1 BHS 10 mins review, pretty decent deal overall as there is no setup fee atm.

  • Network is for sure OVH grade, 1Gbps link speed. Most of the time able to do more than 250Mbps as advertised
  • HDD is HGST SATA 7200rpm, at least it's enterprise grade
  • Slightly better CPU than on spec page (Xeon W3530 instead of W3520)
  • Motherboard Supermicro X8STi, still a desktop grade hardware?
  • DDR3 1333 ECC RAM
  • Extra IPs are almost free

Rage4 Review

$
0
0

I have been using Rage4 DNS for various projects for the last 3-4 years and I guess I decided to write a bit about them :D

Reliability (5/5):

In the past 3 years I don't recall any downtime caused by their DNS, at least one that I'm aware of. Even if there were any problems that I didn't hear of, they must have been minimal.

Features (5/5):

Maybe I'm biased here, but they have just everything that we needed + some extra stuff that looks nice but I never looked into.

GeoDNS Routing (5/5):

There were some problems in the past cause by Google's DNS that broke their GeoDNS routing, but it has since improved. Except for China, the global routing is almost always spot on. Also their routing configuration is incredibly powerful.

Price (2/5):

I am not sure where they pull their query counts, but these are incredibly high. They changed how the queries are counted somewhere down the road, but I'm still not sure if these numbers are correct. On top of that, their current tier is 2€/mil queries which is absurd to say the least. So 50mil queries is 100€/month. After that the price is 1€/mil which is still pretty damn high, especially considering that Amazon Route 53 charges ~0.615€/mil from the start and then ~0.3€/mil. And this is ONLY if you use GeoDNS, otherwise services such as Amazon or DnsMadeEasy are even cheaper. Only at the 2500€/month does the service really get viable if you are a huge user.

The free tier is nice, but it doesn't last very long, especially thanks to the weird query counts.

I must point out that Rage4 was kind of enough to offer us the old price of 1€/mil even for a new domain, but I'm comparing the pricing listed on the page here.

I would give this 1/5 if there wasn't for their FREE tier. For a single site with a lot of bandwidth, their DNS is multiple times more expensive than the server itself.

Performance (3/5):

I thought their performance was quite nice until recently really when I did a few more tests to see if we can reach a similar performance with less servers. I noticed that queries take anywhere from 30-1200ms with them depending on the location and maybe.. cache? It's usually around 30-300ms in EU/US. We are now testing our own solution that with only 3 anycast servers on BuyVM decreased the resolution time in the US/EU to ~50-150ms and in Asia it's slower, but approximately the same in some locations.

I'm not sure if this is caused by the GeoDNS lookups, but it's sometimes quite slow.

Support (5/5):

First, I must say I'm quite easily satisfied with support. They always responded fairly quickly (within a day?) and offered helpful advice and as I mentioned allowed us to use the old pricing tier of 1€/mil. I'm not very fond of one-liner responses, but in the end I always got what I wanted.

Overall I'd say I'm quite satisfied, but @gbshouse drop your price! :P

Secure Dragon review (4 years)

We've been a customer of Secure Dragon since 2012. We host few websites from their servers, notably our web hosting business' website. Uptime has always been excellent. The few issues that arose over those 4 years were all professionally and transparently dealt with. It's obvious that Secure Dragon cares about their customers and their business. Highly recommended.

I've read in Linux Magazine about BHost and I've ordered a silver KVM VPS. After The payment screen I was told my VPS would be set up in couple minutes. SoYouStart - A rather unexpected positive experience (no full review)

When ordering my server with Sys on friday I was really hesitant due to all the feedback I've heard about them such as having to wait for a server for ages... Well for me though everything went just very smooth and I am really happy about this fact which is the reason I am writing this. So as I've said I ordered on friday, and on monday (today - considering there was a weekend in between I expected nothing else) I was requested to send my id via e-mail to them which I did right away. I then called them and asked if there is anything else for me to do. The phone support was really nice and answered the call almost instantly. They verified me within 5 minutes and my server was unlocked 15 minutes after. After about 30 minutes I had a question regarding my server and was answered by E-Mail very quick. All in all a great experience so far :-) No benches just yet as Serverbear for some reason didn't work (I waited for 6h still received no E-Mail) and I don't know any other good benches. But from what I can tell everything is running smooth so far.

I am fully aware that this is not quite a full review as I am not a longtime customer just yet, but I thought I would post this as many people just like me are hesitant to buy from them mainly due to the order process which again went very smooth for me!

Have a nice day y'all!

Today I got an email that they suspended my account for spam. I couldn't believe that, because I do not even use their servers. Asked for clarification.

They forwarded an abuse notification from RBL. IP of my offline server was listed on 2016-04-05, 2016-04-04, 2016-03-30. I've ordered this server 2016-04-08.

They sold already blacklisted IP and suspended my account.

I've checked 6 of their IPs and everything is blacklisted. One IP is blacklisted even since 2008 and they never care to remove it.

HostUS - 6 Month Review - Multiple Locations

$

0

I have a bunch of HostUs boxes I picked up over the past few months to replace my 10 Crissic yearly boxes. I have at least 1 box in each location.

Proof:

I host a couple of production sites on the boxes, all of which are backed up by my boxes at Ramnode.

Haven't experienced any downtime myself (anything greater than 2-3 minutes), (maybe a couple of times a month some high ping spikes / network blips but whoever is abusing the node gets shutdown by their anti-abuse scripts).

Support is always pretty quick, Andrew and Alex and the other staff always reply to my tickets within a timely manner. (I've opened around 6 in the past 6 months)

@AlexanderM is very active here which is great to see.

One recent event that made me really happy was having an on-going issue I had resolved. What I really liked was how they handled the ticket, and how they kept me constantly informed with what they were doing, etc.

I had a very rare, strange issue, along with another member on this site, where our php-fpm process kept getting killed every couple of hours.

You can read more about it here: https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/comment/1661729/#Comment_1661729

I asked for help on LET and we came up with a script to combat the strange issue, but earlier this week it got out of hand, it was getting killed 50+ times a day so I reached out to @AlexanderM via PM here on LET and he said to open a ticket and then escalated it.

(Note: I PM'd Alexander on LET because the other user that was having the issue said he tried contacting support in the past and at the time they couldn't figure it out.)

After their investigation (1-2 hours) they found that the node was misconfigured and it resolved the issue.

I will be keeping all of these boxes and will probably buy more in the months to come.

HostUs is awesome, they run a great network and offer great services/support. Keep it up. :)

One of my favorite providers is killing my service (but doing it the right way) [KihiHosting]

$
0
0

I just received this e-mail from KihiHosting:

Last year we removed our HDD service in favour of our SSD-cached service, no longer allowing orders for our HDD service.

In the past month we've had several issues with our HDD service, in comparison, our SSD-cached service has had over 234(!) days of uptime with no deterioration in service.

We are no longer able to support our HDD service as we move more towards SSD and SSD-cached services as well as a complete restructure of both the Kihi front and back-end infrastructure.

On March 17th all HDD services will go OFFLINE and services cancelled in our billing system. If you have payed for this month already for your HDD service, the invoice shall be refunded. No invoices will be generated between now and March 17th.

We ask that you backup your data and spin up an SSD service on Kihi.

For any requests for data or emergencies, will keep the services offline for one week before scrubbing all data off of each hard drive.

Due to the short-notice as well as the deprecation in service. We will be giving a 500% credit to all current customers still using the HDD service. For example, if your last bill was $16 for your HDD service, we will be adding $80 of credit to be used on Kihi. This credit will be added to your account in the next 48 hours.

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to reply back directly to this email.

The sad part is that my $2/month VPS with 120GB of storage is being cancelled this month. The rest is nice though. Refunding my payment from 2 days ago, 500% credit towards a new VPS, 14 day notice, and 1 week buffer before wiping data.

Current plan: 512MB RAM, 1 CPU, 120GB SATA Disk Space (RAID5 or 6 I think), 500GB Bandwidth = $2/month

Cheapest plan: 512MB RAM, 1 CPU, 40GB SSD Cached, 500GB Bandwidth = $4/month

I'm still upset about losing this VPS, but not upset with how they handled it.

Today @exception0x876 posted his offer to LET. After being with him for six/two months (read on) I think it's good time to say first words...

As I said in title - short story:

January 27 - I registered for a free "OVZ Micro" package with 128MB RAM. After two hours I got SSH details via ticket, because there was no VM control panel. I don't think there is something more to say. I played with it some time, later I threw it in the corner.

March 26 - I remembered that I had a free VPS as I needed it for something. To my surprise I still could connect to it via SSH. Same day I requested OS reinstall. Few hours later I got replay with new SSH password. However I started to play with it in the middle of night. I noticed that my ports were blocked (it was a nat vps). Next morning my ports were opened.

April 6 - Michael posted on LET his KVM offer with 3 days trial and -20% promo. I thought "In last months he gained some experience and he didn't deadpolled. It's just $5... Let's give him a try". I decided to go with HDD node. Third day of trial i met him on live chat. I was about to pay him for a month via Skrill. Unfortunately something went wrong with Skrill and I was forced to verify my account. Michael suggested that he will not suspend my VPS until I solve problem with Skrill. However next day I paid him via BitCoin, because I didn't feel really well with owing somebody money.

April 17 - Michael posted another thread on LET. This time he was looking for beta testers. It was about OpenNebula integration with OVZ. I participated in it. We spent few hours on live chat finding new bugs.

April 27 - Announcement: OVZ Micro promo is coming to its end and will be terminated on May 31st. However it is beign replaced with OVZ Mini (same specs). OVZ Micro owners are able to claim free OVZ Mini till end of 2016.

Meanwhile we spent some time on live chat and I paid him for second month.

Yeasterday I paid for third month. Everytime Michael was kind and helpful (at least he tried his best).

Time for bench.sh....

ReliableServers anti ddos review. - bad anti ddos

I bought one their dedicated servers with "50 Gbps" anti ddos, to host a new game high risk project. http://reliableservers.com Apparently they are just another brand of choopa/vultr since i already used vultr, i decided to gave them a chance.

Guess what, in the first 10 minutes using the service kaboom i got ddosed, rdp off, game off. Their ddos history logs says the attack is just 1,76 gbps at peak and 500 Mbps. And i paid for a 50 Gbps protection service. http://i.imgur.com/OyRKj67.png] (http://i.imgur.com/OyRKj67.png)

If you need a anti ddos host, i don't recommend them.

xzonisy got a refund from us and need another reufnd ! Please read my story with webhosting

Hi Everybody,

I wanted to post this post because i feel un-fair with comments here from members we never hosted them before just read 1 or 2 clients posts .

Ok this is my story, I'm not an american, european or indian guy with my respect for any nationality .. I'm egyptian and proud ..

my company started in 2013 under the name of " plu9.com " then " youmhost.com " then " combozo.com "

I know combozo has a bad name with " bozo " this name has a cool meaning in other languages ! members here always gave a bad look at this name and insult me because of my brand not my work or giving my clients an excellent support through client area, skype, email or phone .

I always posts one offer since 2014 but some members feels bad about posting one offer since one year but the fact is i have posts 3 or 4 different offers but it's still a freedom for anyone to post what he wants.

I want to say something one or two members here without names every post i post it they post bad reviews comments one of them has posted about 2 or 3 bad reviews about us on webhostinggeek . A review web hosting website .

Despite of running this business since 3 years without any issues with my current clients but all problems we have with paypal . ok there is a client need a refund he ran quickly to post a bad review on lowendtalk and webhostingtalk and digitalpoint without asking for refunds we have 30 days money back guarantee after that we can't refund but we did this with one or two clients since we started our business online .

We have changed our name here to: from combozo to stackvps for no reason so people not judge about our name then what they commented after changing our name : yes " you are changing your name , you are scammer " wow guys ?!

Guys we changed our name not our brand please understand ! but they don't .. ok they keep posting bad comments without alerts

Yes this is a freedom because someone wants to gave a bad look to the provider who works on posting great offers for lowendtalk members !

Honestly no one will love these acts here but i can see there is a group of members support these acts and they didn't have the encourage to listen to other side and read other opinions .

All they need to make this provider looks bad with anyway . Because this will make him happy if he see this provider got banned or posted a bad review about him .

The client on the post title here got a refund but he say" yes paypal refunded me but i can't see my credit please refund me again " and the same members in let support the same guy .

This thing become popular and another one because he see that posting on let will help him on resolving his issues and un- suspending his server fast despite of running a software or ddos on his server that make network slow.

I don't know if there is a provider here can be good with these things and the result " one or two members here need you to be banned " for nothing !!

I Will change my brand as soon as possible because alot of people don't like " combozo " name but this won't make us change . we are doing our job right we respect clients we don't suspend any clients for any reasons just reasons i posted above .. I don't know put your self on my place and think please guy what should i do now ?

I'm sorry for writing this but those people made me post this .
